DTC Cosmetology Students Give Makeover to Women’s Shelter

DeKalb Technical College cosmetology students are opening their hearts to people who have had theirs hurt.  “From Our Hearts to Yours” is an event that will offer haircuts and makeovers to residents of the Henry Haven House, a shelter for battered women.   The project is the brainchild of Carla Tyrell, a DeKalb Technical College cosmetology student at the Covington Campus.  “God gave me the vision to organize and plan an event that would uplift, encourage, and build self-esteem to those who have encountered difficult times,” says Tyrell.

Several sponsors from the beauty industry are partnering with DeKalb Tech to offer the full-service salon to deserving people.  The DeKalb Tech Student Government Association, Skills USA, the Criminal Justice Club, and the Cosmetology Dept at the Covington campus will be assisting in the February 10th and 11th event.   Skills USA is a national organization for trade, industrial, technical and health occupation students that promotes leadership, citizenship and character development programs.  “From Our Hearts to Yours” includes students from Skills USA as well as the Criminal Justice Club and the Student Government Association. Organizers of From Our Hearts to Yours expect to offer haircuts, color services, facials, manicures and pedicures to several women on Thursday February 11 and to more than a half-dozen boys on Wednesday February 10.  The event is a prelude to Valentine’s Day by design according to Tyrell.  “Valentine’s day would be the best day to pamper them with love”.

Arnold Taylor is a cosmetology instructor at DeKalb Technical College, and regularly introduces students to Skills USA as part of his curriculum. “While reviewing the guidelines for the community service project for Skills USA, I was intrigued by the community service project and immediately saw the opportunity to put my skills into action,” says Tyrell.  You can see this vision put into action on Wednesday February 10 and Thursday February 11 in the Cosmetology department at DeKalb Tech’s Covington Campus.  The “From Our Hearts to Yours” will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day in building “C” at 16200 Alcovy Road, Covington Georgia 30014.  If you have any questions call Cory Thompson at 404-297-9522 ext. 1118.
