U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson was the guest speaker at the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce’s First Monday Lunch today at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia.
Among those in attendance were members of DeKalb Technical College’s leadership team. The first-term Republican Senator just launched his 2010 re-election campaign 5 months ago. In his brief lunch time speech the veteran politician touched on a number of issues facing congress including health care, the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the economy. He told the group of about 70 people that one of his top priorities when it comes to a Supreme Court appointment would be their views on a water policy. The State of Georgia has been embroiled in a lengthy battle with its neighboring states over water rights for years. “If we don’t have water, we don’t have economic development.” Isakson said. While he has not endorsed nor condemned President Barack Obama’s nominee to the high court, Isakson did say he was reviewing her record on many issues.
On the issue of healthcare, the Senator opposes the president’s proposed healthcare reform plan saying, “It can be done, but not by a government plan.” He goes on to say, “It is time to make fundamental changes and change our belief.”
Isakson has been part of the bed-rock of Georgia politics for more than three decades. He currently serves on the Education Committee in the U.S. Senate. That is good news for schools like DeKalb Technical College according to its President, Dr. Robin Hoffman. “It is good to have a member of our congressional delegation be such a supporter of education in general and technical education in particular,” said Hoffman.
