DeKalb Tech Offers New Classes

DeKalb Technical College is expanding its course offerings in the area of Early Childhood Care and Education.  The Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC) covers a range of training and skills.  Beginning in March of 2010 classes will be offered for Child Development Associate I and Child Development Specialist.

The Child Development Associate I Certificate Program (CDA) is designed to meet the training needs of people already working in the field of early care and education.  People interested in this program must have a minimum of 480 hours of work in the field with young children.  The coursework will prepare a student for formal training in early care and education competencies, knowledge, skills and techniques required to apply for a CDA credential from the Council for Early Childhood Recognition in Washington D.C.  The two quarter TCC includes the following courses:  Introduction to Early Childhood Care and Education; Human Growth and Development 1; Health, Safety and Nutrition.  The second quarter offers two courses:  Professionalism through CDA Certification Preparation, as well as CDA Certificate Assessment.  A student pursuing a TCC in this area will earn a total of 19 credit hours.

The Child Development Specialist student will earn 21 credit hours. The goal of this TCC is to provide the necessary skills for entry-level employment as a Child Development Specialist (CDS). Classes for the first quarter in this coursework include: Introduction to Early Childhood Care and Education; Human Growth and Development 1; Health, Safety and Nutrition.  Second quarter classes include: Curriculum Development as well as Early Child Care/Education Practicum 1.
