New Drafting Program at DeKalb Tech

The Drafting Technology Program of DeKalb Technical College announces the establishment of a new Technical Certificate program in 3 Dimensional Modeling and Rendering.

This is a sequence for designers, architects, engineers, artists, drafters or any others that want to learn how to draw 3 dimensional objects in a computer then develop both photorealistic and impressionistic renderings as well as basic animation sequences of the models.  These are not technical drawings for construction or manufacture purposes but rather presentation renderings for sales, publication and design decision making.

Beginning Fall Quarter 2009 the new 3D Modeling and Rendering TCC (Technical Certificate of Credit) is a sequence of four courses spread over four quarters.  The current expectation is that each class will be taught two evenings each week through the ten week quarter.   We will concentrate on learning the latest versions of powerful yet inexpensive or free software so that students can work at home on professional quality projects with little expense.

In the first class, DDF 133, students will learn Sketchup Pro, a professional 3 dimensional computer modeling program.  The emphasis will be on proper modeling technique and organization so that students learn efficient methods and produce clean files. The second class, PGT 128, introduces photo manipulation software, GIMP 2, a powerful yet free alternative to Photoshop.  Students will learn the basics of raster image creation, input, manipulation, clean up and output.  We will import 2d images into Sketchup to use as surface materials and background environments.  At this stage the 3d models will begin to look like real objects.  In the last two courses, DDF 125 and DDF 135, we will cover photorealistic rendering, including lighting techniques and advanced material applications using a stand-alone rendering program – most likely Kerkythea, although there are several other excellent renderers available.  We will add lights and materials to the 3d models and export them to the rendering program.  In addition we will introduce non-photorealistic rendering, perhaps using a stand-alone painting program, Piranesi.  Techniques will include watercolor and other impressionistic effects to produce artistic, interpretive images.
