Practical nurses and emergency medical students excel on exams

Students in practical nursing and emergency medical technician programs can graduate with a 4.0 grade point average at DeKalb Technical College, but until they pass the state and national board exams they are not licensed professionals.  DeKalb Technical College proudly announces that the fall quarter graduates in both programs had a 100% pass rate on their respective licensing exams.

“We are so pleased with 100% pass rate,” says nursing instructor Joy Jackson.  “There is a tremendous shortage of medical personnel in the United States, and DeKalb Tech is proud of our successful programs.”

EMT studentsThe Practical Nursing program at DeKalb Tech is designed to prepare students to write the NCLEX-PN for licensure as practical nurses. The program prepares graduates to give competent nursing care. This is accomplished through a selected number of academic and occupational courses providing a variety of techniques and materials necessary to assist the student in acquiring the needed knowledge and skills to give competent care.

A variety of clinical experiences are planned so that theory and practice are integrated under the guidance of the clinical instructor. Program graduates receive a practical nursing diploma and have the qualifications of an entry-level practical nurse. DeKalb Tech's Practical Nursing Program is five quarters in length and takes a student who is enrolled full-time 15 months to complete. The program is offered at the Newton Center in Covington beginning a class every Spring Quarter.  For more information, call 404-297-9522, ext. 5000.

It is the mission and purpose of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) education programs at DeKalb Tech to provide students with the educational opportunities necessary to gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to succeed in the Emergency Medical Services and Public Safety arenas. By employing a variety of instructional techniques the EMS Education programs are dedicated to preparing students for entry-level employment as EMT-Intermediates. In addition, the EMS Education Programs offer the Paramedic Program to allow currently licensed EMT’s to expand their career horizons.

The most important goal of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is to assure that EMS professionals caring for patients in their moment of highest need are competent. As The Nation's EMS Certification™, the NREMT accomplishes this goal by developing standards for competent EMS practice and measuring individuals against that standard.  The NREMT works in cooperation with state EMS officials, who issue licenses to EMS professionals.  This partnership helps to ensure safe and effective out of hospital care to the public.
