The latest unemployment figures for metro Atlanta show nearly 11% of the work force is looking for a job. That is why a job fair sponsored by DeKalb Workforce Development and Manpower drew an estimated 750 job-seekers to the Clarkston Campus of DeKalb Technical College today.
From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. people filed into the conference center, many dressed in their finest business attire, hoping to make a contact that will land them a job. For the past four years DeKalb Workforce has tried to play the role of match-maker, matching business with potential employees. Loretta Hicks, DeKalb Tech’s Director of Business and Community Services says, “I think it was an excellent turnout. Employers were satisfied and excited about the quality of the candidates.” One sign of how desperate job seekers are to get employment can be heard in the comments of one of the dozens of employers there who said the candidates were willing to relocate and seek opportunities outside of their current skills and background.
Potential employers set up kiosks to distribute information about their company, while resume-toting job hunters browsed from one area to the next. DeKalb Workforce Development representative Tammy Patterson was pleased with the flow of people traffic and how smoothly the session went. “Out of all the events I’ve attended, this was the most well planned fair in the city,” says Patterson.
This was one of many job fairs held at DeKalb Technical College through the year.
