DeKalb Tech Hires Grant Writer

DeKalb Technical College announces the appointment of Ms. Daryl Barksdale as its new Grants Coordinator.  In these tough economic times when state budgets are being slashed and employees furloughed, schools like DeKalb Tech are looking for ways to generate money for various programs and services.  Barksdale began in her new position August 3, 2009 and will focus on writing and securing grants for the school.  She brings to the job a wealth of experience in both academia and grant coordination. “I’ve spent a lot of time working with high school and college students in previous jobs,” says Barksdale.Daryl Barksdale

The South Carolina native now lives in Atlanta, and has a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of South Carolina and Master of City Planning from Georgia Tech.  For the past eight years Ms. Barksdale has worked in the non-profit world as Executive Director of Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society.  Prior to that Barksdale worked as the Tornado Response Coordinator for the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.  She also was as a consultant on grant applications throughout Georgia. In the mid to late 90’s Ms. Barksdale was the Grant Coordinator for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Dr. Robin Hoffman PhD., President of DeKalb Technical College, says Daryl Barksdale will be a valuable asset to DeKalb Tech, adding, “With the skills and abilities Daryl brings to the table, DeKalb Technical College will be able to seek and secure various grants that are available to institutions of higher learning.  As we face difficult decisions on budgetary issues, Daryl will be able to help us maintain stability and advance our mission as a school.”  Ms. Barksdale is enthused about the challenges she faces in this newly-created position at DeKalb Tech.  “A lot of things have shifted on the state and federal levels for the better and the worse.  If you know what you want and know your goals and focus on finding support for your goals, then you need to approach it in that way,” Barksdale says.
