Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue honors DeKalb Technical College’s Rudolph “Rudy” Nixon for his excellence in customer service. Nixon was among 34 state employees, and one of 4 Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG)employees to be honored at a ceremony Thursday morning at the James H. “Sloppy” Floyd state office building, and later at the State Capitol.
Governor Sonny Perdue launched a state wide initiative in 2006 to improve customer service. Purdue says “One citizen at a time, one customer at a time, we’re changing the way people feel about state government.” When notified that he was getting the Governor’s Commendations for Excellence in Customer Service Award, Nixon says he was excited. “I couldn’t believe it, this is what I do. It’s natural”, says Nixon.
Rudy exudes customer service, energy, and enthusiasm in his daily work. He says he tries to remove problems so teachers can do their job. “If they have these obstacles in their way, they can’t teach as well,” says Nixon. He seems to have a sixth sense about what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. Keith Sagers, Director of Career and Assessment Services at DeKalb Tech says, “Rudy is always ready to lend a hand and takes initiative when he sees something needs to be done. He takes ownership of any task within his area of responsibility and insures that is completed to first class standards.”
The Boston Massachusetts native now lives in Decatur and is one of 240 nominees from 39 various State agencies. Terri Webster, Administrative Assistant to the Dean, nominated Rudy for the award. “I did so because he exemplifies a genuine sincerity all the time, no matter what he’s doing. He always has a positive attitude,” says Webster. She goes on to say, “Seeing Rudy win this award that is so rightfully deserving, has had an unexpected impact on me, causing me to examine my own attitude and motivation at work.” Rudy has been a DeKalb Tech employee for nearly 4 years and works as a custodian. But ask anyone who has come in contact with Rudy Nixon and they’re bound to say he also serves as good-will ambassador to the entire DeKalb Tech community.
On January 25, 2006, Governor Sonny Perdue signed an Executive Order creating the Governor’s Office of Customer Service for the purpose of coordinating, managing and implementing a customer service initiative to elevate the level of customer service experienced by Georgians when interacting with their state government. Its goal: Faster, Friendlier and Easier customer service throughout the State of Georgia.
