DeKalb Tech Graduates GED Class of 2009

Graduation ceremony for more than 1400 General Educational Development Diplomas (GED) was held Saturday morning for DeKalb Technical College. Nearly 170 of this years graduates took part in the formal cap and gown graduation ceremony at The Tabernacle Church in Decatur Georgia.      Graduation Photo Gallery

Graduates were given a Certificate of Accomplishment for completing the required coursework to obtain their GED.  They will receive their diploma from the State of Georgia in the coming weeks.

GED graduationGuest speaker for the Saturday graduation was DeKalb County Superior Court Judge and DeKalb Tech board member, the honorable Judge Gregory A. Adams.  The student commencement speaker was GED graduate Debra Nixon.

Of the 18,000 GED graduates in Georgia every year DeKalb Tech has the largest testing program in the state.  The first step for many of these GED graduates was making the move to continue their education.  The “Next Step” will lead them into credit coursework at DeKalb Technical College.  At this point 25 of this years graduates have transitioned into the College.  Many of this weekend graduate’s have recently completed their requirements and have not applied for enrollment at DeKalb Tech yet.  Kathryn Dreher, Program Specialist for the Next Step GED Transition Program says, “The goal of Next Step is to transition 20 % of the 1,400 graduates into credit courses.”

DeKalb Technical College offers GED courses and tests at several centers within the four county service area, including the Montreal Road location in Clarkston, the Regional Transportation Training Center in Lithonia, the Covington campus, DeKalb and Rockdale County Jails.  DeKalb Tech offers the GED in English as well as Spanish and French.  Testing is also provided for individuals with special physical and learning disabilities and in Braille, audio, and large print.

As an added incentive, all Georgia residents who complete their GED will qualify for a $500.00 Hope Voucher.
