DeKalb Technical College holds its 7th annual Constitution Day and U.S. Citizenship Celebration on Thursday September 17, 2009 at the Clarkston Conference Center. The program is designed to honor and celebrate students who’ve come through the free citizenship coursework at DeKalb Technical College. Classes are held at the college’s Community Education Center at 5745 Buford Highway in Doraville GA.
Thursday’s program was attended by many DeKalb Tech faculty and staff as well as friends, family and supporters of the newly-naturalized American citizens. The program began with a patriotic musical presentation by English as a Second Language (ESL) students Ju Hee Lee and Tomoko Kimura. The guest speaker was Joe Kernan, Community Relations Office with the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Mr. Kernan gave an inspiring speech and provided members of the audience with miniature copies of the United States Constitution. A video presentation entitled, “A Promise of Freedom” was shown. It chronicles the history of America from its earliest beginnings to the present. Fifty-nine current and former students of DeKalb Technical College’s Adult Education Program representing 25 different countries were recognized as having become United States Citizens. Twelve new citizens attended the Celebration and were presented with Certificates of Achievement by DeKalb Technical College.
