2009 State GOAL Winner

The Technical College System of Georgia announces its 2009 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner.  This year’s recipient is Michelle Smith Lank of Swainsboro Technical College.  She is enrolled in an Early Childhood Care and Education Program.

DeKalb Technical College is proud to have had our own Gina R. Smith as one of the 12 semifinalists at the state-wide GOAL competition this year.  Ms. Smith,  was accompanied by  her nominating instructor,  Mr. Francis Nyandeh at the 38th annual GOAL awards banquet held Thursday evening, May 21, 2009 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta.

Gina Smith“She is a remarkable lady, outstanding student, and knows full-well the value of technical education.” said Dr. Robin Hoffman, President of DeKalb Technical College.

Amanda Taylor, Dean of Student Affairs and Co-Coordinator of GOAL said Ms. Smith was “good for the competition”.  She added, “...as for winning the hearts of the people there, she did a bang-up job.”

Gina Smith originally came to DeKalb Tech to enroll her son for classes.  Before she was finished, not only was her son enrolled, but so were three other children and herself….making her DeKalb Tech experience truly a “Family Affair”.

Within hours of Thursday evening’s banquet Gina learned that she is now the grandmother of Cornelius Alexander Smith, II.   Mr. and Mrs. Smith are now the proud grandparents of five (5) grandchildren.

Please join us in congratulating Gina R. Smith, our 2009 DTC GOAL winner and her new grand baby.
