Frequently Asked Questions
What types of classes are offered?
- GED Preparation-Classroom
- GED Preparation-Online; available for students who cannot come to a classroom. Must be reading at least at the 9th grade level to qualify.
- Basic skills help in reading, math, and language/writing
- All classes offer self-paced, individualized instruction using textbooks with instructor assistance. Some sites offer computer-assisted instruction; some have small group classes in reading, math, and language.
Is there a fee for the classes?
No, all classes are free. Books are provided for students to use in class but cannot be taken home or written in.
Who can enroll?
- Ages 19 and up may enroll with proper photo ID.
- 18-year-olds must have proper photo ID and high school withdrawal form.
- Ages 16 and 17 must have proper photo ID, high school withdrawal form, and Special Needs for Underage forms (parent permission and request to enroll in Adult Education classes). A packet of information with these forms can either be picked up at the Montreal Rd. Adult Education Center, Covington Campus - B Building, or mailed upon request by calling 404-297-9522, ext. 2501.
What Type Of ID Is Accepted?
- Any government-issued ID that has the person's photo, date of birth, and current address is accepted. The ID must be current (not expired).
- Acceptable ID's include driver's license from any state, Georgia ID, passport, or military ID.
Where and when are classes available?
- Classes are offered in four counties: DeKalb, Newton, Rockdale, and Morgan.
- There are day and evening classes in all four counties; DeKalb also has Saturday classes.
How can I enroll?
- Each student is required to take a placement test in reading, math, and language to determine starting level. This process varies by class location. To find out more about registration and the enrollment process, please call the Adult Education Center you are interested in attending.
- Space is limited.
How long will it take to prepare for the GED test?
Because the program is individualized, the length of preparation depends on each student's abilities, starting level, attendance, and motivation.
