Testing Information

Welcome to DeKalb Technical College. We are pleased to have the opportunity to help you achieve your educational and career goals. Your application is being processed for admission to DeKalb Tech. Your next step is to take the COMPASS, a success placement inventory.

AFTER TESTING IS COMPLETED AND SCORED ON YOUR SCHEDULED DATE, YOU WILL BE GIVEN A COMPASS SCORE REPORT AND INTERPRETATION OF YOUR SCORES BY TESTING PERSONNEL.

Please allow 3½ hours for testing; however, you may complete the test sooner and will be dismissed for advising, etc.

PLEASE CONTACT THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE FOR RESCHEDULING IF YOU CAN NOT ATTEND THE ASSIGNED TEST DATE.

Tips for Taking the COMPASS

  1. Make sure you have acceptable identification. You will not be admitted without proper ID!
  2. Check your admission ticket for the location of the Assessment Center.
  3. If you are unsure of your test location, do a practice run to see hour to get there, where to park and what time you'll have to leave home to arrive early.
  4. Get plenty of rest the night before the test.
  5. Dress comfortably. Consider dressing in layers so you'll be comfortable no matter what the room conditions.
  6. Be ready to start after everyone has checked in.
  7. Read the directions for each section carefully.
  8. Read each question carefully.
  9. On difficult questions, eliminate as many incorrect answers as you can, then make an educated guess among those remaining.
  10. Answer every question. Your scores on the multiple choice tests are based on the number of questions you answer correctly. There is no penalty for guessing.
  11. Review your work. When you finish a test go back and check your work.

IMPORTANT: GENERAL COMPASS LAB RULES

  1. Issued picture identification (e.g. passport, driver's license, state ID, student ID) is required. Be sure that you look like the picture on the ID.
  2. Examinees will not be admitted late! PLEASE ARRIVE 15 MINUTES EARLY. If you are late you may return to the Admissions Office and reschedule your test.
  3. You MUST have completed an application to DeKalb Technical College and paid the application fee prior to being admitted to COMPASS testing.
  4. Leave all electronic devices (beepers, cell phones) and personal items at home or in your locked car.
  5. Recreational head coverings are not allowed in the testing lab.
  6. Complete the "Application for COMPASS TEST, this is your ticket to enter the lab/.
  7. Use only the calculators provided; no personal calculators are allowed.
  8. Hardware, software, or electrical failure (beyond our control) may require you to be rescheduled.

Examinees will be dismissed and will be required to pay $15.00 for each content area of the test if they are found participating in any of the following behaviors: attempting to remove testing materials, including test questions or answers, from the testing room by any means! Refusing to follow instructions or abide by the rules of the test center.
