COMPASS Practice Tests - View or take practice tests
COMPASS is a computerized adaptive test that measures skill and comprehension levels in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics to determine readiness for college-level courses in these areas. By obtaining the required COMPASS program score, students move immediately into "program ready" status in the college curriculum. Scoring below the required program score on the placement test suggests that a student may lack prerequisite knowledge or skill and needs remediation in that area.
Reading Test
The student is given one or more passages to read, and then answers questions about the passage.
Writing Test
The student is presented with an essay and asked to look for errors in grammar, punctuation, usage, and style.
Mathematics Test
The student solves problems which measure numerical, pre-algebra, and algebra skills. Some of the areas included are:
- basic operations with integers, fractions, and decimals
- exponents
- ratios and proportions
- percentages
- topics in elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, and coordinate geometry.
The COMPASS placement test is scheduled upon receipt of a new student application by the Admissions Office. The students are immediately issued a test date and entrance letter for admittance into the testing center. Students are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes early on the scheduled test date and must bring a photo ID and the COMPASS placement test letter.
Transfer credits from other institutions will be evaluated to determine which sections of the COMPASS placement test are needed. Students must furnish a sealed official copy of their transcripts to the Admissions Office by the application due date in order to take full advantage of transfer credits.
There are a variety of ways to prepare for the COMPASS test. DeKalb Technical College offers onsite COMPASS Prep Sessions in the areas of reading, writing, and math. These sessions are free of charge to attend. Contact the Admissions office for the COMPASS Prep Session schedule.
