Motorcycle Service Technology

Program Information

The Motorcycle Service Technology program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for positions in the motorcycle repair industry. The program emphasizes a combination of mechanical theory and practical experience. The program includes courses in engines, chassis systems, electrical systems, fuel systems, and includes an internship experience.

Program Requirements

To receive a diploma or degree from DeKalb Technical College (DTC), students must complete 25% of their course work at DTC.

General Core Courses (13 hours)
Provides a study of human relations and professional development in today's rapidly changing world that prepares students for living and working in a complex society. Topics include: human relations skills, job acquisition skills, job retention skills, and professional image skills.

Prerequisites: ENG 0097 or entrance English score in accordance with approved TCSG admission score levels and RDG 0097 or entrance reading score in accordance with approved TCSG admission score levels


Emphasizes the development and improvement of written and oral communication abilities. Topics include: analysis of writing; applied grammar and writing skills; editing and proofreading skills; research skills; and oral communication skills.

Prerequisite: Approved admission level math score or completion of MAT 0097 with a grade of “S” or minimum grade of “C”

Emphasizes mathematical skills that can be applied to the solution of occupational/technical problems.  Topics include:  properties of numbers, fractions, decimals, ratio/proportion, percent, measurement, conversions, exponents, radicals, geometric and technical formulas. Class includes lecture, applications, and homework to reinforce classroom learning.

Occupational Courses (56 hours)

Corequisite:  MCT 110

This course serves as an introduction to the program and the field of professional motorcycle service. Topics include: the operation, construction, design, testing, maintenance, and repair of motorcycle and ATV systems and components. Course includes lectures, text, videos, and lab experience.

Prerequisites:  MCT 100, MCT 110, MCT 112

This course covers the construction, operation and repair of the internal combustion engines used in modern motorcycles. Topics include: two and four stroke theory and operation, power trains and final drive systems. Upon completion the student should be able to test, disassemble, measure and reassemble two and four stroke engines, transmissions and final drives.

Prerequisites:  MCT 100, MCT 110, MCT 112

This course covers the ignition, starting, charging, and accessory systems of modern motorcycles. Topics include: basic electrical theory and Ohms law, batteries, AC generators and rectifiers, points/coil, electronic, and magneto ignition systems, and lighting and accessories of motorcycles. Upon completion the student should be able to diagnose and repair the above systems.

Prerequisite:  MCT 100, MCT 110, MCT 112

This course covers the theory, operation and repair of carburetor and fuel injection systems on modern motorcycles. Upon completion the student should be able to service, rebuild and adjust the components of various motorcycle fuel systems.

Prerequisite:  MCT 100, MCT 110, MCT 112

This course covers the maintenance, adjustment and repair of motorcycle chassis systems. Topic includes: brakes, front and rear suspensions, and wheels. Upon completion the student should be able to diagnose, service, and repair motorcycle chassis and suspension systems.

Prerequisite: Program Admission

This course provides instruction in procedures and practices necessary for the safe operation of motorcycle repair facilities. Topics include: work facility safety, work facility cleanliness, safety devices, environment safety, fire prevention, and personal safety.

Prerequisites/Corequisites:  MCT 100, MCT 110

This course serves as an introduction to the field of professional motorcycle service. Topics include: advanced shop and tool techniques, preventive maintenance, adjustments and minor repairs. Upon completion, students should be able to perform basic inspection and service of motorcycles and ATVs.

Prerequisites:  MCT 100, MCT 101, MCT 102, MCT 103, MCT 104, MCT 110, MCT 112

This course covers procedures for efficient and accurate diagnosis of complaints in the mechanical, electrical and fuel systems of the motorcycle.  Emphasis is placed on developing logical procedures for diagnosis. Upon completion the student should be able to perform accurate diagnosis of various motorcycle systems.

Prerequisite:  Completion of all other program courses
Corequisite:  MCT 201

This course provides on-the-job work experience at an approved motorcycle repair facility. The student will have the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in course-work in a workplace environment.

Prerequisite: RDG 0096 or equivalent test score

Introduces the fundamental concepts and operations necessary to use microcomputers. Emphasis is placed on basic functions and familiarity with computer use. Topics include: computer terminology, introduction to the Windows environment, introduction to networking, introduction to word processing, introduction to spreadsheets, introduction to databases, and introduction to presentation graphics.
