Overview

DeKalb Tech’s Medical Assisting Program is a five-quarter diploma that develops the knowledge and skills needed to perform both administrative and clinical procedures in the medical care environment. After completing the required course work, the student interns as a medical assistant.  Graduates will receive a diploma in Medical Assisting and will be eligible to take the Certified Medical Assisting Exam. 

Accreditation

The Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), upon recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

Entrance Requirements

Students must be a high school graduate, or have a GED and must be 17 years of age. Students must complete all required courses before entering the program.  Entrance into the Medical Assisting program is based on competitive admission criteria.  Students must attend the May mandatory selection meeting to be selected for the incoming July class.

Prerequisites

The length of time to complete prerequisites varies depending on applicants’ transfer credit, testing results, and/or class completion.  Prerequisites must be completed by deadline with a 2.5 GPA or higher.  There are seven prerequisites; however, five are mandatory before selection (AHS 109, AHS 1011, BUS 1130, MAT 1012, and SCT 100).  The other two prerequisites must be completed according to scheduled quarter.

Employment Opportunities

Health care providers understand that NOTHING speaks louder than being CERTIFIED.  Most employers look for it when they hire!  Due to cross-training in both administrative and clinical performance, health care providers enjoy hiring Certified Medical Assistant.  Medical Assistants are multi-skilled allied health professionals specifically trained to work in ambulatory settings, such as physicians’ offices, clinics, urgent care, group practices, and public health departments.

Salary Ranges

Starting salaries for new graduates range between 23,000-34,000/annual.  Many salaries include holiday pay, pay-time off and medical benefits.
