Scholarships
The DeKalb Technical College Foundation offers a number of scholarships annually. The purpose of these scholarships is to attract, recognize and reward outstanding students. Some scholarships are awarded based on financial need; others are based on academic merit.
Scholarships are available to students who are currently enrolled or pre-registered in credit or non-credit programs. A student is eligible to receive up to two scholarships per academic year. (July 1 – June 30) The awarding of the scholarships is given solely at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.
DeKalb Technical College Foundation Scholarships
DTC Excellence Scholarship (Merit-based)
This scholarship is usually awarded as a $200 credit at the DTC Book Store.
- Applicant must be currently registered in 2 or more classes and pre-registered for the next term.
- Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher
- Applicants must have completed at least 2 quarters
- Applicants must provide documentation proving involvement in community/volunteer service or student/college organization
- Applicants must present a written recommendation from a past or current instructor
- Applicants must submit an “unofficial” transcript of classes and attendance
- Minimum Scholarship amount $200 bookstore credit.

Success Scholarship (Need-based)
The recipient must demonstrate financial need and be on good academic standing with the college.
This scholarship is usually awarded as a $200 credit at the DTC Book Store.
- Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher
- Applicants must be pursuant of either a diploma or degree program of study
- Applicants must be currently registered in 2 or more classes and pre-registered for the next term
- Applicants must submit a copy of their FAFSA if applicable
- Applicants must present a recommendation from a past or current instructor
- Applicants must submit an “unofficial” transcript of classes and attendance
- Minimum Scholarship amount $200 bookstore credit
Scholarship Application
Paul M. Starnes Scholarship
- TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE
Yearly deadline of September 1st.
Award will be a $500 credit to the DTC Book Store.
- Applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours not to exceed a maximum of 60 credit hours
- Applicants must be a new DeKalb Tech student, first time attendee (transfer credit hours not included)
- Applicants must be currently enrolled (full-time, 12 credit hours or more)
- Applicants must have a cumulative 2.5 minimum grade point average and Work Ethics grade of “2” or better
- Applicants must be pursuant of either a diploma or degree program of study
- Applicants must submit a one-paragraph statement of education and career goals
- Applicants must submit an “unofficial” transcript of classes and attendance
- Minimum Scholarship amount $500 bookstore credit.
Scholarship Application
Snapping Shoals Scholarship
The application submission deadline for this scholarship is September 1st of each year, which will be extended for additional quarters until scholarship is awarded.
This scholarship is awarded to students who are residents of Newton, Rockdale, Henry, Butts, Morgan, Walton or Jasper County, and subscribers of Snapping Shoals Electric Membership Corporation Services. Scholarships will be awarded to students that demonstrate financial need, and will be awarded in the amount of $400.
- Applicants must be a resident of Newton, Rockdale, Henry, Butts, Morgan, Walton or Jasper County
- Applicants must live in a household that is a subscriber to Snapping Shoals Electric Membership Corporation Service, and submit a copy of their household Snapping Shoals Electric Bill
- Applicants must be a full-time student (12 credit hours or more), or be a post secondary option student (to be verified by Registrar)
- Applicants must submit a copy of their Unofficial DeKalb Technical College (DTC) transcript
- Applicants must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and demonstrate financial need (to be verified by Financial Aid office)
Scholarship Application
BMW Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students pursuing an education in automotive technology. Scholarships
are awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need. Applicants for this scholarship must be
recommended by an instructor of the Automotive Technology Department. All applicants must be in good
academic standing with the College and demonstrate career potential and outstanding academic
achievements.
- Applicants must submit a copy of their Unofficial DeKalb Technical College (DTC) transcript.
- Applicants must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Applicants must submit a recommendation for an Automotive Technology Instructor.
Scholarship Application
The Rotary Club of Stone Mountain Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded to current DTC full-time students in good standing pursuing a degree or diploma program at DTC Clarkston Campus. Scholarship will be equal to the total current in-state tuition and fees.
- Applicants must be a current DeKalb Technical College full time student in good standing.
- Applicants must submit a one (1) page typed letter detailing why they are applying for the RCSM
- Applicants must provide documentation proving involvement in community/volunteer service or student/college organization
- Will be awarded for one academic quarter/semester, with intent to renew scholarship for the remainder of the recipients program of study
- Recipients must attend RCSM meetings once per academic quarter/semester
- Application deadline for this scholarship is September 1 of each year

RCSM Scholarship Application
The Rotary Club of Covington Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is not only to assist a student financially but also to educate the recipient about Rotary International, Rotary Club of Covington, and Rotary in general in the spirit of its namesake, Otis Spillers. This scholarship is awarded to residents of Newton County. The DeKalb Technical College Scholarship Committee shall identify three potential recipients and determine need-based eligibility and Newton County residency. The finalists may be invited to a personal interview held in conjunction with a regular meeting of the Rotary. All finalists will be invited to attend the regular meeting in conjunction with the interview. The President of the Rotary Club will appoint, with the Board of Directors approval, a three person committee to oversee the selection process, scholarship renewal and general oversight of the funds and process.
- Applicants must be a resident of Newton County
- Applicants must be a current DeKalb Technical College student, full (12 credit hours or more), in good standing
- Applicant must be pursuing a diploma or degree program of study at DeKalb Technical College
- Applicants must have completed half of the credit hours required of their program of study (exclusive of developmental studies or learning support courses)
- Applicants must have a cumulative 2.5 or higher grade point average, and a work ethics grade of 2 or better
- Applicants must submit a typed letter detailing why they are applying for this scholarship, and include career goals, academic expectations and extracurricular on and off-campus activities (with emphasis on community/volunteer service or student/college organization)
- Applicants must submit a copy of their “unofficial” transcript of classes and attendance
- Applicants must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), if applicable, and demonstrate financial need (to be verified by Financial Aid office)
- The recipient is requested to attend a Covington Rotary meeting and make a presentation, as requested
- The recipient must maintain the personal and conduct standards expected of Rotary Club of Covington members and Rotary International
Dr. Mike Richardson Award - GED Testing Scholarship
GED students may be nominated by their teacher for the Dr. Mike Richardson Award which covers the cost of the GED testing fee and is given to students that have demonstrated the necessary skills to pass the GED Test and have exhibited the qualities of perseverance, determination and integrity.
Friends of LEA Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the Law Enforcement, EMT, or Fire Sciences Academies. Scholarships are awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need and exceptional work ethic. Applicants for this scholarship must be recommended by the Director, or Program Director, of the Law Enforcement, EMT, or Fire Sciences programs of the Public Safety and Security Department. All applicants must be in good academic standing with the College and demonstrate career potential and outstanding academic achievements.
- Applicants must submit a copy of the unofficial DeKalb Technical College (DTC) transcript.
- Applicants must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Applicants must submit a recommendation from a Public Safety and Security Department Director/Program Director.
Juanita G. Woods Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded as a $500 credit at the DTC Book Store. Deadline is June 1st annually.
- Applicant must be registered as a current, full-time student in good standing pursuing a degree or diploma program at the DeKalb Technical College Covington Campus.
- Applicant must have completed at least 12 credit hours at DTC, and be registered for 12 credit hours or more for the next quarter/semester at the Covington Campus.
- Applicants must submit a one-page essay describing their need for this scholarship, including a description of their education and career goals, and their involvement in family, community and place of worship.
- Applicants must present a written and signed recommendation from an instructor, volunteer organizer, or clergy.
- Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or greater, and present a copy of their current unofficial DTC transcript for verification.
- Applicants will be selected based on their academic excellence, financial need, plans for a successful career through technical education, and potential of applying education to assist in the growth and well being of their community.
- Minimum Scholarship award will be a $500 credit at the DTC Book Store. If funds remain after the purchase of books, the student may be allowed to use remaining funds for tuition and fees (after financial aid has been applied).

Outside Scholarships
Emory Johns Creek Hospital Auxilliary Scholarship
Applicants must be enrolled in a medical-related field to qualify for this scholarship.
Application deadline - first Friday in March.
The AT&T - TCSG Foundation Scholars Program & Application
The AT&T – TCSG Foundation Scholarships will be awarded to technical college graduating seniors who meet the following criteria:
- Achieved a TCSG Associate Degree in one of Georgia’s strategic industries:
Aerospace Healthcare & Eldercare
Agribusiness Life Sciences
Agribusiness Logistical and Transportation
- A Graduating GPA of 3.50
- Accepted admission to one of the University System of Georgia universities or colleges
- Demonstrated commitment to their technical college and/or community through their extracurricular/community activities.
The George S. Neath 1st Choice Technical Group Scholarship & Application
The purpose of the George S. Neath 1st Choice Technical Group Scholarship is to reward academic excellence and provide a financial incentive for students who:
- Are working towards the completion of a degree or diploma in one of the following fields of study:
- Industrial Systems / Applied Manufacturing
- Electronics / Industrial Electrical Technology
- Electronics Engineering Technology / Electromechanical Engineering Technology (and related areas of instruction)
- Are beginning their 2nd year in one of the above named degree/diploma programs and have maintained a 2.5 GPA at the completion of their first year
- Are enrolled as a fulltime student (12 credit hours or more)
The $500.00 scholarship will be given directly to the student to use at his/her discretion.
Please note that special consideration will be given to veterans/military men and women.
The extended application deadline for this scholarship is August 1, 2010.
The SEMA Memorial Scholarship
Each year the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) distributes more than $100,000 to the top students seeking a career in the automotive industry. Given that roughly 40% of all applicants received at least a $1,000 award in 2008, this program provides students with a tremendous opportunity to earn additional funds to offset their school expenses. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship - Annual Application Deadline - December 1st
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship honors excellence by supporting outstanding community college students with financial need to transfer to and complete their bachelor’s degrees at the nation’s top four-year colleges and universities. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship makes it possible for the nation’s top community college students to complete their bachelor’s degrees by transferring to a four-year college or university. The Foundation provides up to $30,000 per year to each of approximately 50 deserving students selected annually, making it the largest private scholarship for two-year and community college transfer students in the country. Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expenses – including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees – for the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or scholarships he or she may receive.
To be eligible for the program, students must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their two-year institution. Students cannot apply directly to the Foundation. Each two-year college may nominate up to two students each year to be considered for the scholarship. Soroptimist International of Atlanta
Soroptimist International of Atlanta, part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, is dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. The Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards are cash awards given to motivated women who are the primary financial supporters of their families. The recipients of the awards seek to improve their lives by gaining additional skills, training or education, but do not have the resources to do so. The cash awards are meant to offset any costs associated with the recipient’s efforts to attain higher education, including tuition, books, supplies, child care, or transportation costs.
The local club provides a $1000 cash grant. The winner of the award is eligible to participate in the Region level, where an additional cash award is provided. That winner is then eligible for one of three $10,000 awards at the Federation level.

The purpose of the Shirley Carver Miller Scholarship is to reward GED graduates by providing a financial incentive to work towards continuing their education at one of Georgia’s technical colleges in any field of study of their choosing.
The target audience for the Shirley Carver Miller Scholarship are GED diploma recipients who must be:
- Nominated by a Certified Literate Community Program
- A legal resident of the state of Georgia
- Accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled at a TCSG technical college.
Two $500 scholarships to a TCSG college will be awarded annually. Students may apply by completing the Shirley Carver Miller Scholarship application form. The deadline for receipt of all materials is May 1, 2011.
In addition to the completed application form, applicants must submit:
- Current Complete Official Transcript(s) of Grades (if already enrolled in college) or copy of GED scores (applicants who have never enrolled in college must submit a copy of his/her GED scores.), transcripts MUST be submitted in a sealed envelope. The transcript may be included with the completed application or sent directly to CLCP Office or sent under separate cover directly from the college Registrar’s Office to the address listed below.
- Two letters of recommendation including one from a CLCP director or board member and one from an Adult Education Program Administrator, teacher or GED instructor. The recommendation letters should include: (1) the recommender’s relationship with the applicant, (2) how long they have known the applicant, and (3) why they are recommending the applicant for receipt of this scholarship award.
